Zuidlaardermeer

Beauty that came naturally

Project Overview

Project Description

Zuidlaardermeer. Also home to the rare marsh bird the White-cheeked tern , formed our working area on behalf of Het Groninger Landschap. In this unique nature reserve, an important restoration project was carried out with the aim of increasing the area of (water) reeds. This improved the habitat for a number of characteristic and area-dependent species, such as the Bittern, the Great Warbler, various species of terns and even the Otter.

To achieve this goal, pools and ditches were created at strategic locations. In addition, reed beds were raked off and the released material was thoughtfully incorporated in the foreshores. This created additional reed beds, which fulfil an important ecological function within the area.

Besides this core work, additional measures have been taken that contribute to habitat improvement. For example, forest was removed in several locations to restore openness in the landscape. Shoring was installed to protect banks, ditches were deepened to influence water levels, and existing quays were lowered to optimise water management.

All these interventions have transformed the Zuidlaardermeer area into one large contiguous nature area. This not only greatly improved conditions for flora and fauna, but also strengthened the spatial cohesion between the lake and the surrounding nature areas. The project thus constitutes an important step in restoring and preserving a special ecosystem, where nature and landscape come together.

With these sustainable interventions, we are working towards a future where rare species will once again have plenty of opportunities and where visitors can continue to enjoy the rich biodiversity and natural beauty of the Zuidlaardermeer area.
