Zuidlaardermeer

On behalf of Het Groninger Landschap, we carried out various nature restoration works in the Zuidlaardermeer area. The project aimed to increase the area of common reed and improve the living conditions for characteristic species, including the bittern, the great reed warbler, the white-cheeked tern and the otter.

To achieve this, we have created pools and channels at strategic locations, thereby establishing new transitions between land and water. In addition, existing reed beds have been cleared. The material removed was then incorporated into the foreshores, resulting in the creation of new reed beds that contribute to the natural development of the banks.

A range of additional works have also been carried out to further optimise the layout of the area. We have cleared woodland at various locations to restore the desired openness of the landscape. Vulnerable banks have been reinforced with revetments, ditches have been deepened to improve water management, and existing quays have been lowered to allow for more natural water level management.

Through a combination of earthworks, hydraulic engineering works and nature-based landscaping, a large, contiguous nature reserve has been created in which water, reed beds and riparian zones blend seamlessly together. Through this work, we have made a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the Zuidlaardermeer area and to enhancing its ecological quality for the future.
