Nature Restoration

With respect for the environment

Nature restoration contractor, specialist in sensitive areas

Nature restoration takes more than just good intentions. Are you working in a sensitive area where biodiversity is under pressure, waterways are silting up or deposition is causing land encroachment? If so, a targeted and thoughtful approach is needed to restore the ecosystem in a sustainable way.

Knoop supports nature restoration projects in complex and difficult-to-access areas. Using the equipment we have developed in-house, we find a suitable solution for every situation, with minimal impact on the environment.

From wetlands to stream valleys and peatlands, every landscape calls for a different approach. Combining knowledge of the area with technical expertise and clear communication results in efficient delivery that contributes to a stronger and future-proof ecosystem.

Working with nature, not against it

What does nature restoration involve?

And why is it necessary?

Nature can do a lot by itself, but not always without help. In many areas, the natural balance has been disturbed by desiccation, silting or human intervention. Without targeted measures, biodiversity will continue to decline.

Especially in these situations, it is important to intervene appropriately, with respect for flora and fauna and with a long-term perspective. Years of experience in a range of nature reserves allow us to quickly understand what an area needs and how that can be delivered without unnecessary disruption.

Applications in nature restoration

Nature restoration often takes place in difficult-to-access and sensitive areas, such as:

  • Swamps
  • Stream valleys
  • Raised bog and fen areas
  • Tidal areas such as deltas, mudflats and salt marshes

In these environments, standard equipment is often not suitable. For this reason, we use specialised equipment such as amphibious excavators with low ground pressure. This minimises damage to the subsoil and keeps the environment intact.

For specific applications, such as stream bed elevation, we have developed proprietary installations that allow precise and controlled work without damaging banks or infrastructure. The machines we have developed in-house enable smart combinations for an efficient and appropriate solution.

Our nature restoration activities

Depending on the area and objective, we perform a range of different activities:

  • Sod cutting: Removing the top layer of soil to restore nutrient-poor conditions and bring back specific vegetation.
  • Creating peat extraction ponds: Creating open water in peatlands to improve biodiversity and water structures or prevent land encroachment.
  • Forest removal: Restoring open landscape structure and stopping unwanted afforestation to preserve ecological function.
  • Restoring peat ridges: Restoring historic structures in peatlands to balance water and land
  • Disposal site construction: The temporary storage of recovered soil and dredged material in a controlled and efficient manner.
  • Creating ponds and shallow channels: Creating habitats for amphibians, insects and other species.
  • Pumping excavated material: Moving silt or soil without damaging fragile subsoil and to prevent erosion.
  • Stream bed elevation: Raising stream beds to retain water and prevent desiccation of the stream valley

Every intervention calls for a custom approach. The right combination of technology, timing and execution determines the final result.

Specialist equipment for nature restoration

Working in sensitive natural areas requires equipment specially designed for those conditions. Standard machines often cause too much pressure on the soil or are simply not usable in wet and difficult-to-access areas.

For this reason, we use amphibious excavators from Waterking, which move effortlessly over water and soft ground. Low ground pressure keeps damage to the terrain to a minimum.

Knoop also has installations we have developed in-house, such as systems for stream bed elevation and for pumping material. This enables more efficient operations and reduces the need for transport movements, further reducing the impact on the area. The combination of experience and in-house equipment allows us to take on projects others are more likely to turn down.

From plan to practice: Our approach

Every nature restoration project starts with a proper understanding of the area. For this reason, we first consider the ecological objectives, the current situation and the challenges in the field.

Based on that, we decide on an appropriate execution strategy, taking account of accessibility, soil conditions and local flora and fauna. We then deploy the right equipment and carry out the work carefully, with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

During the project, there is continuous coordination with stakeholders such as ecologists, site managers and clients. This keeps implementation in line with the ecological work protocol and allows adjustments to be made where necessary.

Available for a variety of projects such as

  • Removal and processing of vegetation
  • Creation and establishment of depot sites
  • Profiling of banks and marshes
  • Dredging and cleaning of waterways
  • Soil screening and pumping of material
  • Working in sludge depots

Additional services to keep your projects running smoothly

Our efforts do not stop at execution. We also offer additional services to help projects run smoothly, such as;

  • Tailor-made project plans
  • Logistics support and transport
  • Advice and documentation (such as import/export documents)

Frequently asked questions on nature restoration

When is it necessary to bring in a nature restoration contractor?

When an area has become unbalanced due to, for example, desiccation, silting or overgrowth, and targeted interventions are needed to restore biodiversity and ecosystems.

Amphibious excavators, shredder dredgers plus custom equipment with low ground pressure are used in sensitive and wet areas. This minimises damage to the subsoil.

We carry out projects throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, in peatlands, stream valleys, coastal areas and more. See where we have carried out all our projects under ‘Reference Projects‘.

We work with a wide range of clients and partners to deliver a successful nature restoration project.
