Project description

A special and carefully executed nature restoration project was realised in the Fochteloërveen using the amphibious excavator Waterking WK 220 NG-5. This advanced machine was deployed to invert the upper top layer of the fragile peat bog.

Large areas of heathland and peat moss were dug loose to achieve several ecological goals: stimulating the growth of peat mosses, creating floating vegetation mats and reducing the level difference between two adjacent sub-areas. These interventions contribute to the restoration of the natural raised bog landscape.

The choice of the WK 220 NG-5 had several reasons: The WK220 NG-5 has a high production capacity, does not sink into the swampy soil and exerts minimal ground pressure. As a result, the impact on the surrounding natural area is limited and the soil structure remains largely intact. This makes it very suitable for working in fragile ecosystems such as the Fochteloërveen.

An ecologist was present throughout the project to supervise implementation. This ensured that the flora and fauna present were handled carefully. Cooperation between engineering and ecology was central, with the aim of enhancing natural processes without unnecessary disruption.

Thanks to this approach, the Fochteloërveen remains a valuable habitat for numerous plant and animal species and a unique place where visitors can enjoy the peace, space and beauty of the raised bog. This project marks an important step in the preservation of this special nature reserve, so that future generations can also continue to enjoy all that the Fochteloërveen has to offer.
