Project Overview

Nieuwkoop

Over the years, we have carried out various projects in Nieuwkoop. Through our work, we are helping to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy this unique natural environment.

As part of this nature restoration project, peat trenches have been dug, areas of woodland have been cleared and dams have been constructed, consisting of double rows of posts with brushwood. This work contributes to the restoration and conservation of the characteristic lowland peatland landscape.

This project utilised the innovative Shredder Dredger. This powerful machine can shred, process and pump peat, vegetation, wood, stumps and silt in a single pass. Thanks to this efficient method, nature restoration projects can be carried out more quickly and with less disruption to the area.

LIFE project – New life in the peatlands

As part of the LIFE project ‘New Life in the Peatlands’, we carried out work – in collaboration with the Natuurmonumenten and Staatsbosbeheer – such as cutting sods from reed beds and digging peat trenches.

The aim of this project is to improve the quality of lowland peatlands in the Netherlands. This is achieved, amongst other things, by re-excavating silted-up peat extraction pits and deep-tilling reed bed plots. This restores the natural succession process, allowing characteristic plant and animal species to thrive once more. In this way, valuable ecosystems are preserved and strengthened.

Space for the Round Sundew

The ‘Space for the Round Sundew’ project is a collaboration with Natuurmonumenten and focuses on improving the quality of the lowland peatland area.

The work includes, amongst other things, removing self-sown trees and clearing reed beds. This restores a suitable habitat for characteristic species, such as the round-leaved sundew. At the same time, biodiversity is enhanced and native plant and animal species retain a healthy habitat. In this way, this special nature reserve will continue to be of great ecological value in the future.
