Project description
The national park, with over 10,000 hectares of contiguous low moorland wetlands, is the largest in northwestern Europe. We were allowed to use our expertise to carry out nature restoration work. For the LIFE II project, we removed forest in the Weerribben and dug capholes. The released material was pumped to the Wetering-west depot location using a 7 km long discharge pipeline.
The Kiersche Wijde and Kerkgracht (that Wieden) were part of the large LIFE II project. Here we dug ditches and fens, removed forest and dug capholes to create a riparian habitat. The capholes were created at various depths. The released material was pumped to a sand extraction site using a pressure pipeline so that it could be made shallower.
For the habitat plan De Wieden, capholes and marshes were restored. The released material was pumped to the island “Voornpol” by means of the Shredder pontoon.
In this cultural-historical area, we are working hard to preserve the variety of ponds, lakes, marsh forests, large reed beds, hay meadows with their flora and fauna. We look back on a beautiful and special project of nature restoration work we carried out.
